Summer Hair & Scalp Care
Summer sun, heat and outdoor activities can aggravate scalp itch. The hair and scalp experts at the Scalpicin Stress Free SiteSM offer the following summer tips to keep your scalp and "strands" in tip-top shape:
  • Use a gentle shampoo (made for your specific hair type) and a clarifier to remove damaging chemicals from the hair and scalp.

  • Shampoo hair in lukewarm water; hot water strips away natural oils of the scalp that protect the skin. In addition, avoid overwashing hair, which can also strip protective oils.

  • Don't use blow dryers or heated styling tools every day. Instead, let hair air dry during the warm-weather months. This is particularly good if you wear a curly hairstyle each day.

  • Avoid hair-lightening products that may only dry hair further.

  • Wear a bathing cap to keep hair protected from chlorine and/or salt water. Both chlorine and salt are very drying to the hair. Remove cap and rinse immediately after exiting the water.

  • If you opt not to wear a bathing cap, rinse hair immediately after swimming to remove chlorine or salt water. Your best bet is to rinse hair with fresh water BEFORE swimming, since it will allow the hair shaft/follicle to soak up fresh water, minimizing the uptake of chlorinated or salt water.

  • Use a hair conditioner that contains sunscreen. In a pinch, massage sunscreen into hair and scalp, and wash it out later.

  • When in the sun, avoid sunburn of the scalp by wearing a hat. Wear hats made of a breathable fabric, such as cotton, but avoid mesh fabrics that can let sunlight pass through. Sit under a tree/umbrella if you choose not to wear a hat.

  • To combat gnats and other biting insects, experts advise people to don a hat or use insect repellent on clothes and hats, as per product instructions.

  • Severe or chronic scalp itch should be brought to the attention of a physician.

  • If sun, chlorine or other seasonal irritants exacerbate scalp itch associated with seborrheic dermatitis, Scalpicin® Anti-Itch Liquid "Hypoallergenic Formula" will start to work instantly to provide itch relief. For more intense itch associated with seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis, try Maximum Strength Scalpicin® "Dermatology Formula."
